Thelma was one of seven children. She had two brothers and four sisters. She grew up speaking Italian. She had to give up her job at Lorraine Mill because the hours were too demanding for raising children. She was able to make her own hours at a jewelry shop in North Providence instead. She and her husband, who was an oilman, had four sons.
